That’s the first verse of Los Lonely Boys’ song “Cottonfields and Crossroads”. It is a blues song that talks about rural West Texas and the part of town that we don’t always get to see.

In turn, that song title is applied to Hector Galan’s documentary of the early part of Los Lonely Boys ascent from (very) young men backing their dad, to taking creative control themselves, to becoming an Austin, then national favorite.

And you know what? Mr. Galan takes us to that same part of town in those same rural West Texas towns to show the influences on los hermanos Garza.

Not in a sad or exploitational way, but as a means of setting the scene for the explosive arrival of Los Lonely Boys and Texican Rock and Roll.

For those of you not into long reviews, here’s the summary. GO BUY THIS DVD.

What should you as the buyer know in advance? (Yes, I’m convinced you’ll buy!)

This is a documentary, not a rock concert flick (although a couple of songs have been added for the DVD release). While several songs are included as backing to the flow of the movie, this is about the boys, their father and mother and families, and a few others who have an insight to offer along the way.

There’s been some criticism leveled that the interviews are so tight that they constitute more of an advertisement than an explanation or expansion. Come on. There’s not 10 years worth of celebrities and critics to line up and interview – but there are people who know the heart and soul of LLB available to talk to the camera. Advertisement? Lengthy press release? I don’t see it that way, and no one else that I have spoken to about the film has seen it that way; in all fairness, I am an avid LLB fan.

As stated above, the documentary sets the stage for LLB’s burst onto the music scene by going back in time in San Angelo to show what it was (and is) like in some ways and coming forward (both at beginning and end) to LLB playing for the home town crowd.

The movie’s timeline stops before the band’s meteoric rise to take the Grammy for “Heaven” – but all of the joy is present, as is the personal charm of the boys. Henry describing the definition of success will surely touch you.

And there’s a fair amount of pain as well as the family splits so that Dad’s dream can be followed. One thing we don’t get to see is the effect of all those miles and all those shows on the boy’s individual families, which is a shame only in that the wives and children have also helped pay for LLB’s success.

So, reader and potential purchaser, let me again offer that this DVD deserves a place in your collection.

If you are a fan anyway – as are the more than 14,000 members of the LLB Street Team – maybe you’ve already got a copy, and if not, go get it!

If you only have radio exposure to LLB by way of “Heaven”, I recommend you pick up a copy of the DVD and see the backstory up close and very personal.

I can think of any number of places where this film would also be very, very valuable in the classroom – whether music or history class.

Where to find the DVD? Here at Amazon and a couple of other outlets. Order Texican Style, the music DVD of a huge show here in Austin while you are at it.

Where to find LLB on the road? Go see the schedule at [...], and take my strongest recommendation to see a live LLB show.

And as for LLB themselves?

Still funny, thoughtful, down to earth guys, earning a living to support their families doing something that they truly love to do.

Still very much the home town San Angelo boys…but you knew that, cuz they told us so…

Yes some day I’m gonna go back, baby

And I’m gonna live on my own

But you can only find us baby

On them cottonfields and crossroads

God bless…

I discovered the music of Henry, Jojo, and Ringo Garza one day while browsing CDs at a music store. I listened to a sample of the first track, and I did something to me. The second track was as equally great. By the third sample, I had chills. The SRV/Hendrix/Santana guitar sound was pouring out with a unique passion. The harmonies reminded me of The Beatles, America, and Eagles. I purchased the CD and started to search for information about Los Lonely Boys. I related personally to these brothers from San Angelo on many levels.

Before all of this happened, though, there was a story to be told. A story about three brothers and their family and their music. Hector Galan, director of Cottonfields and Crossroads, saw them perform when they were playing in a small Austin bar and felt compelled to capture their electifying stage presense and raw … yet polished sound. All of this was before Grammys, magazine covers, and television appearances.

Don’t make the mistake of concluding that Cottonfields and Crossroads was created as a promotional piece. Galan was at the right place at the right time… and uncovered a familiar story of living in West Texas and growing up as a Mexican-American with all of the richness and strugle that accompanies our raza.

Seeing this film made me even more proud of La Familia Garza and now… La Familia Galan.

The setting of this western is the town of Clearwater, TX (near Laredo), probably in the 1870′s. The four sons of Katie Elder, who had not seen each other, or her, in years, come to her funeral. The eldest brother, John Elder (John Wayne), watches the funeral from a distance.

Why are some of the townspeople anxious for John Elder, a gunslinger, to leave the town as soon as possible after the funeral? The brothers do not get straight answers as to how it was that their mother had recently lost her property, and begin to smell a rat. They also learn that their father had been murdered, but no one will say who was responsible.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Sons of Katie Elder / The Shootist! Click Here

A woman who was a close friend of Katie Elder describes Mrs. Elder as a devout woman of character, and how disappointed she was in her four sons. At least some of Katie Elder’s sons mailed her letters and money, but had otherwise gone down the wrong paths in life. Mrs. Elder at least wanted one of them to go to college, but he balked. The woman did not want to discuss the murder of Mr. Elder because Katie Elder didn’t want vengeance and further violence.

Three of the brothers wanted to fulfill their mother’s wishes that the remaining one go to college, but he continues to balk. John Elder keeps the pressure on.

Sibling rivalry exists even in adulthood. At one time, all four brothers are involved in a brawl. At another time, they drag each other into a body of water.

The conspiracy of silence about Mrs. Elder’s property and her murdered husband begins to unravel despite the current owners’ persistent efforts to have it stifled. In time, the current owners of Mrs. Elder’s property frame the four sons for murder. The local law enforcement officials seem ready to believe the charge with no evidence, and a lynch mob surrounds the prison. There is a massive shootout, and three of the four brothers are wounded. Will any of these three survive? Will they be able to clear the Elder name of the murder charge?

My husband is a John Wayne fan and believes “The Shootist” is Wayne’s best. I tend to agree, but “The Quiet Man” is great, too. I gave husband this for Christmas, and he was VERY pleased!

“Katie Elder” also good!

I learned about “Lady In Cement” during my childhood. At least the song, for I saw it as one of the tracks on Paul Desmond’s “Summertime” record album, which my late father owned. When I listened to it, it had the rhythm of a suspenseful crime drama. As I got older and read the information inside the Paul Desmond album, I discovered “Lady In Cement” was a motion picture crime drama, starring Frank Sinatra.

I liked “Tony Rome” (1967). But I find “Lady In Cement” (1968) a more suspenseful mystery. Rome (Sinatra) makes a shocking discovery while scuba diving in a Florida bay: the nude body of a beautiful blonde is found with her feet encased in a block of cement. Hence, the “Lady In Cement”.

Frank Sinatra again comes off well in the role of the tough-talking cool private detective Tony Rome. Dan Blocker, well-known for playing “Hoss” on the “Bonanza” tv series, is quite impressive and believable as the crude, statuesque Gronsky, who takes a liking to Tony Rome, and hires him to investigate the murder of his former girlfriend, Sondra Lomaxx, who is the ‘Lady In Cement’. His crude behavior and gruffness, however, does not make him a bad guy. He’s actually on Tony Rome’s side!

Richard Conte again reprises his role as Lieutenant Santini. There is a humorous part later in the film where Rome gets Santini in a bit of trouble with the law! It is during this ‘car chase’ sequence the familiar “Lady In Cement” theme is played.

Raquel Welch turns in a good perfomance as the wealthy heiress Kit, who suffers alcoholic blackouts where she (conveniently) is unable, under Rome’s interrogation, to recall specific details concerning her dealings with the “Lady In Cement” before she died. Although it seems there isn’t much for Welch to do in the film but look voluptuous and pretty, she manages to bring sensitivity to her character.

“Lady In Cement”, like “Tony Rome”, shows the underground, sleazy side of Miami life, replete with late 1960′s strip clubs and ‘Go-Go’ dancers. There is a lot of mature, smart talk in the dialogue. Particularly between Sinatra, Dan (“Hoss”) Blocker, Richard Conte and, of course, the villains. Then, again, isn’t smart talk usually a part of a crime drama??

There is the musical score by Hugo Montenegro in the film. When I first watched “Lady In Cement”, I enjoyed the music so much that I didn’t pay close attention to the movie’s plot. I soon ended up ordering the movie soundtrack cd.

Finally, I think credit should be given to the “Lady In Cement”, herself: the bit actress playing Sondra Lomaxx, Christine Todd. The film’s highlight, where Rome discovers Todd in her cement anchor beneath the sea, is worth repeated viewings. It is surreal and hauntingly beautiful with the background score “The Shark” being played.

First, Rome vaguely makes out in the distance what appears to be a blonde topless ‘statue’, with arms splayed overhead, gently rocking in place in a patch of seaweed (which strategically covers Todd’s nude lower half). Upon closer inspection, Rome discovers that it is not a statue, but an actual woman who is naked before him. And dead. There is a close-up of Rome’s shocked expression seen behind his mask and scuba regulator. To make sure his eyes are not deceiving him, Rome next proceeds to swim around the upright corpse, eyeing the nude form up and down. One can imagine what’s going through Rome’s mind: That he’s encountered corpses before. But nothing like this! A shocking, yet hauntingly beautiful scene.

This surreal underwater scene abruptly ends when two sharks turn up unannounced, and go in pursuit of Rome. (Note: If you look at that scene closely, one can see Christine Todd’s eyes, which were formerly lowered, are now clearly opened! Worse with the sharks swimming about her and Sinatra/Sinatra’s stunt double.)

Christine Todd’s brief stint as the “Lady In Cement” is unforgettable and convincing. My only question is how did she manage not to release air bubbles, or choke on water as her mouth was slightly opened underwater as she played dead?? I’ve viewed the ‘Undersea Discovery’ sequence many times, trying to ponder how was that effect achieved. It isn’t a special effect, for everything was clearly done underwater. And I’m quite sure scuba divers were nearby off-camera supplying air to Todd when she needed it. Despite I can swim, I am unable to hold my mouth open underwater prolonged, without me sputtering!

Anyway, “Lady In Cement” is my favorite film, next to “The Amphibian Man” (1962). It is unique and well-done.

This is the best and most delightful of the Tony Rome films. Frank Sinatra is on top of his game as the not so tough P.I in seedy pre-drug Florida. Raquel Welch is nice to look at and Dan Blocker is marvelous as the unstopable Gronsky. For a thirty year old film this one stays fresh and bright. Crisp dialogue and ham without the rye makes for a fun evening.

Premiering on CBS in 1988 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Superman, this Joseph Ruby and Kenneth Spears (Ruby-Spears) produced cartoon series marked the first time that elements of the Christopher Reeve Superman movies and the post-Crisis Superman were combined onscreen. Veteran comic book writer Marv Wolfman acted as the lead story editor for the series and helped transform Lex Luthor from the mad scientist featured in the Superfriends cartoons to the billionaire industrialist found in the 1986 John Byrne penned Man of Steel revamp. Each episode consisted of a lead 18-minute Superman story, followed by a 4-minute flashback story that was part of the ‘Superman’s Family Album’ segment, which chronicled Superman’s life from his adoption by the Kents to his first appearance in costume. With character designs by the legendary artist Gil Kane, this series featured some of the finest animation that Superman had seen in decades, despite having lasted for only one season. The tone of the stories were also slightly more mature than what had been previously seen of Superman on the Saturday morning landscape, save for the underrated Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians cartoon series. The title sequence for each episode started off with the music cue from the John Williams Superman theme and quickly transitioned into the series’ original theme music by Ron Jones, accompanied by the familiar “faster than a speeding bullet” narration made famous by the Fleischer Superman cartoons and the George Reeves Adventures of Superman TV series. Here are the episodes on this set;

13. THE LAST TIME I SAW EARTH- An alien seizes a space shuttle with Lois and Jimmy onboard.

IT’S SUPERMAN- Clark arrives in Metropolis and makes his first appearance as Superman.

The sole bonus feature for this set is the ‘Corruption of the Corrupt: The Rise of Lexcorp’ featurette, which examines Luthor’s transition into the head of a greedy, corporate conglomerate. While the inclusion of series-specific extras would have been a welcome addition, most fans are probably just grateful to finally have this long overlooked series on DVD. With many of Superman’s screen adaptions now available to own commercially, one can only hope that it is simply a matter of time before WB revisits the remaining Superboy seasons, as well. As for the exceptionally well-crafted Ruby-Spears series, it served as the perfect bridge between the kid-friendly cartoons of the 80s and the animated series phenomena of the 90s. Now, over two decades later, fans can once again enjoy these lesser-seen adventures in Superman’s never ending battle!

Ruby-Spears Superman series finally gets the DVD treatment that is deserves. This show for a superman fan such as myself was classic animation at its best. Superman is an american icon and this short lived series was a great tribute to The Man of Steel. This series along with both of the Super Powers series will remain classics forever. This would make for a perfect christmas gift for any superman fan that you may have in your family. Ruby-Spears Superman series is fun for the whole family.

Why do people still love Rudolph Valentino after all these years? This DVD provides an ideal way to get acquainted with the great leading man in his most famous roles.
After the phenomenal succes of The Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse, studio execs were unsure what to do with the darkly handsome Valentino. At last, he landed the lead role in Paramount’s The Sheik. Based on the “scandalous” best-seller, it was romantic melodrama in it’s purest form.
It’s the story of a young English woman, Diana (Angnes Ayres) who crosses paths with the desert chieftan Sheik Ahmed ben Hassan. Fascinated by her spunk, he abducts her to become his wife. Diana is not too thrilled with the concept and resists. Thus begins the battle of wills.
From a coldly logical standpoint, the Sheik is not a very good movie. Valentino’s acting is not as good as in his later work. The script is somewhat disjointed. In fact, it was a predicted bomb when it was first released. However, the movie posesses a kitchy, innocent charm that is probably as fascinating now as it was then. It is one of those movies you find yourself enjoying even though you don’t know why.
The version on this DVD is a tinted print in pretty good shape. Some of the titles vary slightly from the VHS release (for example, Diana is referred to as the daughter of a poet in the VHS and the daughter of a peer on DVD) Some scenes are added or cut. People who own the VHS release may chose to make their own comparisons.
The soundtrack is electronic/orchestral. It is a selection of music that was available to organists at the time and probably some of the music was used when the Sheik was first released. The music generally does not sound too electronic though it may bug purists (though the VHS edition has an obvious synth score). I enjoyed it.

The second film on the DVD is the sequel, Son of the Sheik. Valentino plays both father and son. Unlike The Sheik, which followed the book it was based on, Son of the Sheik changed the plot considerably (and I feel for the better). Valentino is Ahemed jr. who meets and falls in love with Yasmin (Vilma Banky) They plan a secret rendezvous but Yasmin’s corrupt family follows her and captures Ahmed for ransom. Because he will not give his name he is tortured. His friends rescue him but he is very depressed. He believes poor Yasmin betrayed him. So, when opportunity arises, he steals away with her for his own brand of revenge.
Son of the Sheik is a well directed, well acted movie. While on a smaller scale that the Sheik, it had a much larger budget. There is much comedy added. Valentino and Banky absolutely set the screen on fire as a pair of lovers who now hate each other. However, for all it’s charms, it does not posess the oddball charisma that made the Sheik such a fun movie.
The print used is black and white, the music can either be the new electronic/orchestral score or the original re-release orchestral score. The latter has a lot of static and I found it annoying so I used the newer score instead.

Whichever one of these movies is your favorite, I am sure you will enjoy the presentation.

Also included on the DVD:
Three Valentino short films including footage from his funeral. Rather depressing.

A great DVD to round out your collection, to introduce yourself to Valentino or for comparative purposes. Quite worth it!

My only real glimpses of Rudolph Valentino were through movie stills and clips and couldn’t see what the fuss was about. After taking an interest in silent films, I decided to buy this dvd and see what he was all about. Needless to say, I wasn’t disappointed. The Shiek and The Son of the Shiek are two amazing and surprisingly intriguing films though the latter is superior and was definitely my favorite. The first is the story of a shiek who becomes entranced by a strong-willed woman he kidnaps and from there on the story unfolds. In the second, he plays dual roles, father and son, and there is quite a bit more action. Still, both movies are great and worth watching.

As for Valentino, he was an amazing presence on film. To me, he is “the” sex symbol that is incomparable to any from his era to now. In the first movie, his mannerisms and facial expressions are more dramatized, but the second film, he is more natural and its in that one he was even more beautiful. I can see why people are still entranced with him after all this time. Count me in as one of those.

As for the DVD, both of the films are good prints and the music fits the film. You also get to see the Pathe newsreel showing his funeral which is very sad. Most interestingly you get to see him judge a beauty contest and there is a clip called “The Shiek’s Physique” which is a clip of him sunbathing on the beach. He is gorgeous in that as well.

All in all, its a great deal and a good bargain to get to see one of the most amazing actors. Great!

This is a landmark film, as it tackled issues that were considered to be taboo at the time. Race hate, miscegenation, and passing for white are some of its themes. Unlike “Imitation of Life (1934), which in its own fashion dealt with the themes of passing for white and the unequal opportunities afforded blacks, this is not a sentimental tearjerker of a movie. Rather, there is an undercurrent of anger and righteousness that permeates it, and rightly so. It is a hard edged, no holds barred type of film. There is nothing sentimental about it.

Controversial in its time, the film is about a young bi-racial woman known as “Pinky” (Jeanne Crain), sent up north by her southern granny (Ethel Waters), so that she could receive an education. While up North, she begins passing for white inadvertently, as that is how she is apparently perceived, and makes no move to correct that perception. She studies and works hard, becoming a nurse. She then meets white Dr. Thomas Adams (William Lundigan), and they fall head over heels in love. He has no idea, however, of her background and knows her as “Patricia” not “Pinky”.

Pinky, leaving him behind, returns home to the South one last time to confront her past and her personal demons. She ends up meeting bigotry head on, as down South where Pinky is known she is treated as blacks are treated, and does not like it one bit. It hardens her resolve all the more to return North and continue passing for white. She would like nothing better than to put as much distance as is possible between herself and her racial heritage. Helping out her grandmother, however, she ends up playing nurse to Miss Em (Ethel Barrymore), a crotchety, crusty, and ill eighty year old former plantation owner who has come down on hard times.

When Miss Em dies, she wills her estate to Pinky, creating a controversy that rocks the town when the will is challenged by distant relatives, the Wooleys. They are outraged and claim that the “colored girl” used undue influence over the elderly Miss Em. This galvanizes Pinky to stand up for her rights, enduring a mockery of a trial. Moreover, when Dr. Adams comes looking for her, Pinky finds herself taking a position with respect to their relationship that is a revelation to herself.

This is a film that at the time was highly controversial, due to its themes. It was a film that was certainly daring for its times. Why they cast a white woman for the part of a biracial character may seem puzzling to those of us in the twenty first century. I presume that this casting was mandated because there were love scenes between Pinky and her fiance, Dr. Adams, and this type of scene would have been forbidden in those days, if the actress cast for the part of Pinky were other than white. While a bi-racial woman was cast for the role of Peola, the woman who passed for white, in “Imitation of Life” in 1934, it was a safe bet to do so, as she had no love scenes with which to contend. Notwithstanding the casting of Jeanne Crain in the role of Pinky, this film was cutting edge stuff in 1949.

Wonderful performances are given by the entire cast. Ethel Waters, Jeanne Crain, and Ethel Barrymore all received Academy Award nominations for their roles in this film, though none of them won. While Jeanne Crain’s casting was a stretch for her as an actress, she did give it her all, letting the viewer sense Pinky’s discomfort and angst over the racial divide. Ethel Waters is superb as the hard working, humble soul who did the best that she could for her beloved Pinky. As the imperious Miss Em, Ethel Barrymore was perfectly cast and gives a superlative performance, imbuing the character with a humanity that a lesser actress may not have. All in all, this is a movie that lovers of classic films should enjoy and one that should be in any serious movie lover’s collection.

Although this movie is somewhat dated, it has a message that is still important: you must be true to yourself. This was one of the first films to successfully deal with racism. So controversial was this film in 1949 it was banned in the south. The performances by all three women are very good. Jeanne Crain’s scenes with Ethel Barrymore are especially moving. I’m surprised by the review from Amazon. You can’t look at this film with the eyes of someone living in the 1990s. Pinky should be appreciated for addressing a subject that hadn’t been addressed at all up until this film was made. From a technical level, this film is nicely put together. The music, the cinematography are all first rate. As film history, it’s worth taking a look.

There are films that are purely formulaic and consequently redundant, and then there are select classics that seem to be inspired by the same formula but in a way that make them feel fresh every time you see them. Such is the case with legendary director Frank Capra’s political 1939 masterwork, as he and veteran screenwriter Sidney Buchman tell the story of the underdog who must face seemingly impenetrable obstacles to achieve a greater good. Capra made his reputation on films which conveyed such unbridled idealism like his most famous work, 1946′s It’s A Wonderful Life, but I would argue that this one has a broader sense of resonance since it deals unflinchingly with the corrupted American political structure, a situation that has unfortunately changed little in the nearly seventy years since the film’s original release.

A young James Stewart is perfectly cast as Jefferson Smith, the naïve leader of a local Boy Scouts-type organization, who is swept into office as his state’s junior senator by the all-powerful political machine headed by a Boss Tweed-like figure, media mogul Jim Taylor. In awe of the senior senator, Joseph Paine, Smith follows Paine’s advice to push a bill for a national boys’ camp back in the home state. A problem arises in the fact that the camp is to be built on the Willets Dam site which Taylor and Paine plan to use for graft. Along the way, Smith wins the support of his initially cynical secretary, Clarissa Saunders, who becomes inspired by Smith’s integrity and encourages him to push the bill. This leads to his tenacious efforts to pass the bill, going as far as staging a 23-hour filibuster on the U.S. Senate floor. It’s a monumental climax that Stewart turns into one of the most classic scenes in film history.

Supporting performances by familiar actors are uniformly strong with the wonderfully acerbic Jean Arthur as Saunders, Edward Arnold in full-bluster mode as Taylor, Harry Carey as the silently supportive Senate president and Claude Rains as the conflicted Paine, with Thomas Mitchell, Guy Kibbee, Eugene Pallette, H.B. Warner and Beulah Bondi in smaller roles. The one flaw is the abrupt ending in which one character experiences an instant transformation with little pay-off shown for Smith’s efforts. Apparently, Capra unwisely cut these scenes out after preview audiences seemed fidgety at the two-hour mark. Regardless it remains an inspiring piece of American cinema. The remastered 2008 DVD from Columbia fortunately contains a pristine print from the Library of Congress vaults, as well as the original theatrical trailer and a featurette and commentary track from the director’s son, Frank Capra, Jr.

Almost anyone who watches movies very much has heard of this classic film about political corruption. People who have not watched it in a long time or have never seen it will be surprised at how topical it is, and how sharp in its critique of Washington insider politics. The claim that this re-issue has been improved by a new digital remastering process is not false. The older version wasn’t really bad, but this one is noticeably better, if not by a lot. People who really love this movie a lot will appreciate it.

This collection represents volume 2 (there will be 3 total). Considering the order of the first 13-episoide release, it appears as though BCI is going to keep the continuity of the original airing in which case this collection should contain the following episodes:

The Council of Evil Part 2

Like all of BCI’s incredible releases, the second volume of the 2002 series is slated to be packed with creative staff commentary, bonus materials, and a pair of collector’s art cards. Fans of the series are anxiously awaiting BCI’s announcement of the third volume which will consist of the 13 episodes that made up the second (and final) season of this excellent show.

Some people, like me, do not have perfect hearing. I appreciate it when a dvd isn’t closed captions has at least subtitles. These DVDs have neither. If it had one or the either, it would be worth four stars.

Come on BCI, get with the program!!

Be forewarned that this review is primarily for the DVD release of Hellraiser, not the film itself. It’s no secret that Anchor Bay has done an excellent job bringing classic and cult horror films to DVD, even if it’s over and over again. The 20th Anniversary Edition of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser adds a few new extras, while bringing over the same extras that were available from the older DVD release of the film. What’s new here are the interviews with the film’s stars Doug “Pinhead” Bradley, Andrew Robinson, and Ashley Laurence. Other than that, it’s the same stuff that we had before, including the interesting commentary by Barker and Laurence. If you already own the previous release of Hellraiser, the new interviews alone aren’t any reason to go out and pick this up whatsoever. Anchor Bay has quite a habit of double and triple dipping their DVD’s (there is yet again another edition of the original Evil Dead on the way as well), and the 20th Anniversary Edition of Hellraiser is no different. As for the film itself, it’s an excellent and original exercise in violent horror that still holds up 20 years later, and remains Clive Barker’s crowning film achievement. If you don’t already own Hellraiser on DVD, then by all means pick this edition up, but as said before, if you already own it, there’s no reason to pick this edition up too.

Hellraiser is an extreme horror lover’s dream come true. Clive Barker’s unique vision marked a virtual rebirth of the genre at a time when slasher sequels were the fun, yet predictable, norm. Although the premiere setting for viewing this movie is a crowded theater of screamers (and sick puppies like myself who find humor in gore), one can still achieve a quite satisfactory effect watching this movie alone in the dark. Some horror creators rely on blood and gore for its own sake, others rely on the story itself to produce the desired effect. Clive Barker is one of the few horror geniuses who can make copious amounts of gore an integral and necessary part of the story. Hellraiser can be deliciously gross, so those with weak stomachs should beware. It features rats; decayed, maggot-infested meat; and copious amounts of blood–and that’s just the teaser. Later there are acts of cold-blooded murder, human dismemberment by arrays of chains, a partially formed, pus-dripping, oozing carcass, and then the incredible Cenobites themselves.

The movie at its simplest level is a retelling of a story that goes back to Goethe’s Doctor Faustus and beyond–when you sell your soul to evil forces, you will regret it. Frank Cotton is a despicable, uncaring man who has grown bored with life’s most extreme pleasures. When he hears about and eventually acquires a puzzle box which can open the door to a new world of perverse pleasures, he finds out that one man’s pleasure is another man’s pain under the tutelage of the Cenobites. Somehow, he manages to escape the other world, and when his brother’s blood is spilled in his chamber of horrors, his body begins to reform itself. More blood is required to complete the job, and his brother’s wife Julia supplies it by picking up men at bars and bringing them home for Frank’s nourishment. The prim and proper Julia was ravaged by Frank soon before her wedding to Frank’s brother Larry, and she enjoyed the experience so much that she will do anything to get Frank restored to vaguely human-looking life. Larry’s daughter Kirsty, played by Ashley Laurence in her motion picture debut, discovers what is going on and manages to get her hands on the puzzle box. When she is introduced to the Cenobites, the fun truly begins.

The Hellraiser series degraded into a sad mimicry of itself in later movies, but the original vision personally sculpted by the masterly hands of writer and director Clive Barker is a horror masterpiece. The Cenobites are one of the most unusual, fascinating “bad guys” ever dreamed up in the imagination of man. They really don’t appear too often in this film, and Pinhead (played by the great Doug Bradley) is never referred to by this name even in the credits. When they do appear, with Pinhead enunciating such great statements as “No tears, please. It is just a waste of good suffering” and “We will tear your soul apart,” they are truly horrifying, mysterious, and larger than life. Less is definitely more when it comes to the prominence of Pinhead and his demonic associates in the movie.

Those who dislike horror probably have sense enough to stay clear of Hellraiser. Those of us who revel in extreme horror delight in watching it. If you are an intermediate-level horror fan initiated by the Scream and Freddy/Michael/Jason movies, here is your chance to really test your horror mettle.

I think that perhaps the people who reviewed this film negatively simply don’t see it the way I do. I don’t claim to know what the director had in mind, but I know what I take from this movie. I am NOT a golfer, but this film leaves me with an appreciation for golf which I have never before felt. Bagger Vance was okay, but more an entertaining film than a study of golf. Nor is A Gentleman’s Game all about golf. There’s a lot going on here, some of it is about golfing, some of it deals with the inside, or other side of the game, the “loopers.” Ultimately this movie is not about golfing, even though it chiefly centers on golfing and around a golf course. The overall story comes together with meaning greater than its several individual parts. Gary Sinise never dissapoints & the entire cast delivers wonderfully in this film, but Mason Gamble is the one to watch. A very talented young actor. I am reminded of Kevin Spacey in Shipping News, wherein Spacey virtually tells the entire movie with his facial expressions. Gamble does not quite have as demanding a role here as Spacey had in Shipping News, but he does remarkably well with what he’s given—& considering his age that’s all the more impressive. We easily know what his character, Timmy, is feeling at all times without having to hear any dialog. Mason Gamble has been around a while, & I’m sure will have no trouble remaining in the industry as long as he chooses to keep making movies. Look for him in the quirky Rushmore, or in the hook-setting opening scene of Arlington Road, & periodically thereafter throughout. I believe he was also Dennis the Mennace, & I’m sure he’s done a few other films. I like gentleman’s Game because it tells a story that centers around something I previously cared nothing about; now I at least have some appreciation for, and a much greater understanding of, golf. It’s a good movie, and it’s deffinately telling a worth while story. Plus it had the added bonus for me of coming as an unexpected surprise treat when I first saw it. (I had a cheap rental coupon & never hearing of it before, happened upon it while browsing in Hollywood Video) I reccomend this movie as a great one to watch and a good one to own.

This was a very good movie for anyone who loves golf, or for any one who loves a good story. I picked it up for my fiance, who is definately a “golf nut”. He loved it! The characters are interesting and the theme is that of lessons in life and “coming of age”. A great addition to any collection!!
